About the House

This house is referred to as the Wingate-Allen-Jackson House. When Rhett and Diana Jackson moved to Athens from Seattle, Washington, in 1997, they dreamed of owning a historic wood-frame house with a big front porch. Driving through the Dearing neighborhood to see the Tree That Owns Itself, they serendipitously drove down Henderson Avenue.

They ended up raising two Barrow Buddies, CMS (Clarke Middle School) Owls, and CCHS (Clarke Central High School) graduates in this house, and they made many improvements that no one will ever notice. Recently, however, they did make a very noticeable kitchen renovation that modernized the space while keeping the ember-scarred floors and an earthy, organic feel.

This circa 1910 home retains original wainscoting, door ornamentation, picture molding, plaster walls, brass hardware, several leaded windows, coal fireplaces and oak floors that are unusual on Henderson Avenue. The upstairs floors are heart pine, typical of Henderson Avenue.

The exterior details include a steeply-pitched roof with hipped and gabled extensions, a center hipped roof dormer, a central front entrance with wide transom (window above doorway), sidelights (windows to left and right of doorway) and paneling, a full-width front porch supported by Tuscan columns, and cottage windows with delicate diamond panes above a fixed pane.
