Historic Athens One Story
The One Story Athens initiative began in 2022 as an extension of Historic Athens' mission to be a proactive force in developing community-wide understanding of the value of historic buildings, neighborhoods, and heritage. One Story Athens aims to bring awareness to communities and connect generations with their heritage. Through the preservation of narratives involving neighborhoods, music, art, restaurants, politics, religion, and society, we will help to tell a fuller story of Athens.
Exploring the shared history of Athens, one story at a time.
Our continued initiative is to tell the history of underrepresented groups in Athens, and expose new audiences to public history. We want to continue to provide programs that are free and accessible to the public, bringing in a variety of audience members and ensuring that no one is hindered in any way from participating.

One Story Live
Every Friday, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. , Historic Athens One Story hosts a virtual oral history interview with African American Athenians, conducted and curated by Denise Sunta.

History Hours
Every third Tuesday of the month, One Story Athens provides public programming at the Lyndon House Arts Center.

Heritage Walks
A series of guided tours highlighting Athens’ historic neighborhoods and places. Tour guides are local volunteers with a love for Athens and a special place in their hearts for the places they take you.

What is next for One Story Athens?
One Story Athens plans to grow our reach in the Athens community.
In Fall 2024, One Story is leading two new youth development programs. Both programs will introduce K-12 youth to the ideas of historic preservation and public history, allowing them to take pride in their community and learn from each others’ experiences.
