Equitable Home Preservation Initiative

The Historic Athens Equitable Home Preservation (EHP) Initiative is funded through the Athens Justice and Memory Project, led by the descendants of Linnentown. It is part of Historic Athens’ ongoing commitment to preserving historic homes while ensuring equitable access to safe, comfortable housing.

The EHP program was established in 2024 with the support of ACC-GOV and the Athens Justice and Memory Project. The EHP project aims to conduct large scale rehabilitation services towards homes that are 50 years or older over the next three years. Our mission is to preserve affordable housing, prevent community displacement, and maintain the cultural spirit of local neighborhoods in Athens.

The Athens Justice and Memory Project, the first resident-led effort aimed at addressing the history and impact of Urban Renewal in Athens-Clarke County, has been tasked with collaborating with Linnentown residents, historians, economists, and other stakeholders to redress for the removal of the Linnentown neighborhood and provide a model process for future projects aimed at equity.

Common projects include:

  • Floor and ceiling repair

  • Plumbing

  • Roof/gutter repair

  • Home weatherization

  • Accessibility modifications

  • Painting

Funding for the EHP Initiative is provided with support from ACC-Gov. and the Athens Justice and Memory Project via funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The EHP Initiative also relies upon local construction partners and volunteer groups whenever possible.
