About the House

This house was built in 1901, and the current owners moved here in 1986. They do not know much about the house’s history. However, the previous owner was Mrs. Pickett, a teacher who retired from Clarke Central High School. To the current owner’s understanding, the house was originally built as a “half house.” They are unaware of when it was expanded to its current size.

They did some renovations as soon as they bought the house, especially when they noticed one of their children playing around with a gas heater vent in one of the house’s eight fireplaces. At this time, the current owners put in central heating and air conditioning.

Some of the bushes and trees in the garden are quite old. The boxwood on the front lawn was already 50 years old when they moved in. The two azaleas close to it were already there, as well. The homeowners say they love living in this house very much, especially when they get to host their sons who have since moved away and come to visit with their families.

They take advantage of the picture railing around the house to show off their art, and put in several built-in bookcases to accommodate most of their books. The bookcases were designed to match the millwork around the house’s original doors, in order to appear that they have been in place since the house was built.
