About the House

Joan and Gary Bertsch have resided at 228 Henderson Avenue for three decades. Their one-level “Queen Anne Free Classic” home, built circa 1900, has a Folk Victorian influence, a conical or cupola-like projection on the front hipped roof above the front entrance, spindles exhibiting Eastlake detailing and slender Tuscan columns on the front porch.

Many Athenians have lived in this home over its 120 years, including preachers, professors, professionals and students. The house was substantially restored in the 1990s, providing the Bertschs a comfortable refuge in a beautiful neighborhood on an active corner (Henderson Avenue and Harris Street) among UGA students and historic homes.

Filling their home with local artwork and locally found treasures, adding a studiolo/guesthouse and workshop in a beautifully landscaped backyard in the 2000s, the Bertschs love spending their golden years surrounded by friendly neighbors, young and old, feeling the energy of student life and loving Athens for over 50 years. Having traveled the world, they can’t imagine living any other place.
