About the House
Allen Hill Talmadge built this house as a gift for his bride, Maude O’Lillian Fullilove, shortly after their wedding in February 1894. At that time, the street was called States Rights Street. Allen and Maude’s daughter, Marian, would go on to organize the first Girl Scouts troop in Athens.
Allen worked as a young man in the foundry and then operated a hardware store on East Clayton Street. He later opened a store on North Lumpkin Street where he sold carriages, buggies, and harnesses.
He continued to build and sell houses on Henderson Avenue and elsewhere while also shrewdly buying up farmland and commercial real estate. In 1900, he bought and moved into the house just around the corner which had been built by Robert L. Bloomfield in 1857.
Since moving into this house in March 2022, the current owners, the Blount family, have enjoyed hosting a couple of special gatherings in the central hall of their home.
