About the House

This house is believed to have been built by the Carr family, of Carr’s Hill, circa 1840. It was the first house built in the Milledge Avenue area. At that time, Milledge Avenue was a wagon road running from the Federal Road of 1806 to Watkinsville. The Federal Road was later renamed Prince Avenue.

By 1856, this house, which was two-over-two (two rooms on the top, two on the bottom), was moved to the back of the property, and a grander house was built by the Dearing family on Milledge Avenue. That house is now the Alpha Phi Sorority house.

In 1870, what is now Henderson Avenue was cut, and this house was moved again to this street. At this time, the ell was added. Due to its many moves, Dot Whitehead nicknamed it the “first mobile home.”
