House History:

Built in 1912, this single-family residence is a quintessential example of early 20th-century architecture, located within Athens' historic district. The home showcases timeless craftsmanship with elegant finishes that reflect the character of its era.

The property features 3,213 heated square feet, with interior plaster walls, exterior wood framing with sheathing, and a continuous brick foundation. Its double pine flooring and durable asphalt-and-fiberglass shingle roof further highlight the quality materials typical of the time. While the home lacks attic and basement spaces, it offers a highly functional floor plan. Historical Residents and Business Connections:

The home has housed an array of residents and even served as a connection point for a notable Athens-based business.

  • 1915: The property was home to the Briggs family, including Prescott Briggs, a clerk; Alice Briggs; Harry Briggs; and P.W. Briggs, an auditor for C.A. Rowland and Co.

  • 1920: The residence became home to Perino Wingfield and his wife, Elizabeth Wingfield, continuing its tradition as a family-oriented property.

  • 1949: The property was tied to Athens Boiler and Machine Works, Inc., a significant industrial business in Athens with roots dating back to 1848. This company, which remained a vital part of the Athens economy until its relocation in 1972, dealt in boilers, polishing wheels, and other machinery and had strong ties to World War II-era manufacturing and government contracts. During this time, Luise M. Blount, who served as the District Chief Clerk at Southern Bell Telephone & Telegraph Company, was a resident.

Significant Historical Ties:

The property is noted in the 1978 National Register of Historic Places Nomination Form for its association with M.L.B. Allgood, contributing to its historical significance within Athens.

Through its connections to prominent individuals, families, and a historic business, this home embodies the rich and dynamic history of Athens. A blend of residential and commercial use over the decades has further enriched its legacy, making it a standout property in one of the city’s most cherished neighborhoods.
