Learn about the portion of the Boulevard neighborhood “outside the city” on this tour. We will walk down some of Athens’ best-preserved streets, including one whose streetscape hasn’t changed much since the late 1920s. Tourgoers can learn about the city stockade, life working in Southern Mill, different forms of early architecture, and its relationship to a state legislator with a less-than-stellar reputation.

Kristen Morales moved to the Buena Vista Heights neighborhood in 2006 and was immediately curious why Boulevard was a locally designated historic district but the neighborhood “up the hill” wasn’t. By 2012, she and a dedicated group of neighbors successfully lobbied to create the Buena Vista Heights Local Historic District to recognize its mill houses and unique character that reflects Athens’ connections to its streetcars, Southern Mill, the State Normal School, and development pressures from the 1920s through the 1950s.
