Carr’s Hill was one of the first developed areas of Athens. Many in Athens still fondly remember growing up on Carr’s Hill when the mills and Oconee Street school were still open and operating.
Maxine Pinson Easom is a native East Athenian who grew up on Little Oconee Street. She attended Oconee Street Elementary and raised her children in East Athens. Maxine has devoted her time and efforts to discovering, describing, and drafting the history of the neighborhood community through research that included interviews with neighbors, schoolmates, family, and friends.
Maxine Easom and Patsy Arnold's book "Across the River: The People, Places, and Culture of East Athens" not only fills a gap in the known history of Athens, Georgia but also provides first-hand accounts of early and mid-20th century community life.
