House History:
Despite its long history, this residential area did not appear on Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps until around the turn of the 20th century. In 1908, the house that currently stands at 260 Hill Street– we'll call it the Slater House– appears to have been located closer to Church Street, which once ran through the property that is now owned by the Clarke County School District and terminated at Prince Avenue. By 1913, a smaller dwelling that shared a parcel with the Slater House appears to have been demolished and the Slater House moved further to the right, away from Church Street. At this time, the house appears to have been modified, as evidenced by a change in the shape of its footprint.
By 1926, the Prince Avenue Baptist Church had been erected at the corner of Church Street and Prince Avenue. In the early 1970s, the last person to reside at 260 Hill Street sold the house to the Church for a whopping $10. In 2006, the Church sold its six-acre site to Piedmont College, which included the historic sanctuary, the Family Life Center, the facility for Prince Avenue Christian School and the building that the Slaters now call home, which the College used as a bookstore. The Clarke County School District purchased this campus from Piedmont College in 2020 for the relocation of their administrative headquarters, and graciously sold the house at 260 Hill Street to the Slaters, who brought it back to its original use by rehabilitating it as their private residence.
Note: If anyone asks… Church Street does not get its name from a church being located there, but rather from Dr. Alonzo Church, the sixth president of UGA.
